My first food venture blog post will be The Black Toro!
Located in one of the most popular food central in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Glen Waverley. Established recently in July 2012 competing in the Kingsway strip of restaurants, has surely been successful. I’ve always wanted to try The Black Toro but it was always booked out for the two dining sessions they had on the peak days of the week being Friday, Saturday and Sunday…
With the long anticipation, we finally had made a booking on a Saturday night for the 2nd session 8.15pm. We ordered the set menu of $60 per person which entails the dessert tasting platter worth $36 by itself. If you’re not a dessert person, there is a set menu for $45 per person – more room for savoury! The deal is unlimited food, selected by the chef’s recommendation with a mixture of ‘Poco plates’ (entree) and ‘Grande plates’ (main).
As for the service… it was great! Always feel looked after when the waitress asks if whether this is our first experience with The Black Toro. They also look after you with dietary requirements since our all our dishes were decided by them. The only criticism is that the waitress spoke too soft, we could hardly hear her whilst we were seated. Environment is dim, but lit up by individual electric candles at each dining table and dimmed lights. Kitchen was bright and clean which reassured the hygiene of the restaurant.

Wagyu beef sliders with onion, tomatillo relish & monterey jack cheese
Lamb barbacoa with accompaniments – not entirely sure if this is the correct name of the dish (sorry guys!)

Desserts were a variety of sweet, sour and savoury! I would recommend plain water as your drink to accompany all the sensation of your tastebuds! It really it mind blowing! My favourite dessert tasting are:
- Deconstructed peanut butter cheesecake, chocolate ice cream & honeycomb AND
- Peach sorbet, caramelised white peach & pistachio nuts!
Why? they both have a variety of savoury vs sweet or sweet vs sour when you try the dishes – and i’m quite impressed with the seamless transition of the two flavours. Usually desserts are either all sweet or all sour – these give a variety and dwells well in the mouth!
Overall it was great in value, we ate approx $140 value worth of food coming to a total bill of $130! Another positive comment is that the restaurant opens til late! Both of us, spent 3 hours there and time flew!
