Just off Camberwell and Toorak Road sits Enter Neighbour. It’s a quiet area attracting many locals for coffee and a light brunch. Accessible by 75 tram where the Hartwell shops are. Enter Neighbour has just passed their 1 year birthday on 23rd Feb where they celebrated by offering chocolate and free coffees to their visitors!

Don’t be fooled by their cosy shopfront, they have dining areas behind their kitchen that could fit sizeable groups and a courtyard seating for a sunny day!

Their Soy Latte was right for me – not too milky and not too strong. They use Axil coffee beans where the roasting site is in Hawthorn – love how they use local beans. I know how hard latte art can be when it comes to using soy milk, so I paid attention to other coffee orders by other customers. They perfected their latte art when using full cream milk 🙂 Sorry these photos are all using soy milk. hehe…

Soy Chai Latte is from Prana Chai – good spice with strong cardamon. The smell of cinnamon on top was exciting. Their Soy Matcha Latte is from Urban Blends, which I found a bit more earthy than what we prefer…

J ordered the Benedict Cumberbatch, $19,  pumpkin puree, pulled lamb, on pickled cabbage and poached eggs topped with hollandaise & sesame seeds. At first J thought it was just another way to make eggs bene named differently. But we were surprised by how refined the flavours were. Much like the actor that can play many different roles this dish clearly displayed different flavours in each element. The hollandaise sauce felt light and sweet.

The egg was poached perfectly and the golden yolk was runny. The pulled lamb was nice and moist and not too salty but still kept much of the lamb flavour. The pickled cabbage complimented the dish by providing a nice sour taste but also when you let it soak with the toasted sourdough, it helped to bring out the sweetness of the bread.

Although the dish was well plated, J couldn’t help but set each element aside to find out what each combination would yield our tastebuds.

I ordered a vegetarian dish, Truffle King, $21 Swiss Brown + Baby King Oyster Mushrooms + Spinach cooked in White Truffle and Porcini Cream + Ewes Milk Cheese w/a Poached Egg on Toast.

This dish surprised me, generally truffle could either be under or be overpowering a dish. Truffle and cream sauce was just the right amount to dip with the toast. The cream coated around the two types of mushrooms that brought out more than just mushrooms taste. It was a delight to have the spinach cooked with the White truffle sauce, this brought out a lot of flavour in my tastebuds. I couldn’t fault this dish. The poached egg was exactly the same consistency as the Benedict Cumberbatch!

For both these dishes, we could add $2 for gluten free options. So catering for everyone!!

We were fortunate having Enter Neighbour invite us to a strong community based cafe. We saw many of the locals come for a meal and feel connected with the team. Their team is humble and produce very good quality brunch.

Overall, we enjoyed our Sunday brunch in a quiet setting. They have a range of brunch selections and for the drinkers, a range of alcohol available. I can’t believe they do tapas dinner as well! If you’re after a cafe that delivers without overcomplicated and fancy brunch, I’d suggest you give Enter Neighbour a visit!

If you visit Enter Neighbour for quick coffee takeaway, be sure to bring your KeepCup as every coffee you get they donate 30c to Foodbank Victoria to help support Victorians who are food insecure.

My Israeli friend recommended me to try Tahina Bar in Northcote not long ago.  I realised later that they had opened a second outlet in the heart of Brunswick Street. Easy to get to by tram or car, we visited on a Sunday just after 2pm. Although the lunch hour had passed, there were still a few customers dining in on a wet Sunday afternoon. We sat under the sheltered outdoor area at the back.

We ordered the Fresh Honey Spice Chai (made in Bonsoy), and it came in a small teapot. I love it when I can pour my second cup of Chai! My critique is usually “needs more spice”, but this one had just the right amount of spice and enough honey to make it creamy with the soy. It was a very enjoyable hot drink on a winter’s day.

I love tomato-based sauces so I went straight for the Red Shakshuka Platter, $15. Without the addition of meat, it did not disappoint – it was huge enough for a sharing dish! I loved how clean the dish was, with two runny egg yolks and the egg white was just cooked to give each bite some texture. Mixed herbs that was sprinkled on top of the skillet was just enough to give a hint of flavour to accompany the red sauce. Be sure to dip this with some pita bread and the Israeli salad. The salad had cucumbers that were very fresh on the left, the middle was lightly pickled cabbage and on the right was the spicy green salad that had a kick to it. Thankfully, I could take the amount of chilli. *phew*img_00671-2944906img_00701-2046578

The next dish we shared was the Roasted Eggplant, $8 – half an eggplant marinated with spices overnight and roasted for 4 hours to bring out the soft and sweetness of eggplants. Dip this will hummus makes the dish very creamy. You can’t see much of the eggplant from the photo because the Zataar Kale chips are tossed on top of it, drizzled with tahini sauce. I really liked their tahini sauce, I could have it with anything that we ordered. C & I felt that the Kale chips could have been a little crispier to have as “chips”, but overall it added another texture against the soft eggplant

Cauliflower Papiot, $8.50, was another one I wanted to try, just because I’ve been tasting these lately and would like to compare. Although it wasn’t a whole cauliflower, it was still very soft when cutting through it. When I first bit into it, I could taste the sweetness of the cauliflower. This was a highlight for me; I think the lemon brought out the natural sweetness of the cauliflower. Tip: eat it while it’s still hot!

Lastly, we had Tahina’s Seasonal Bowl, $15.50 roasted brussels sprouts, herb mushrooms, roasted heirloom baby carrots, sautéed kale and rainbow chard, hummus and zhoug. We were warned about the zhoug that if we can’t take spicy to stay away from it. Phew – I’m glad I did, I tried a bit and I definitely can’t imagine myself dipping any more.

You can see there’s lots of veggies in the seasonal bowl, but each cooked differently. Brussel sprouts and baby carrots were both roasted, but you can’t taste one over-powering the other. Each kept to its distinct taste and C enjoyed the Brussel sprouts and sautéed kale. The sautéed kale had some chilli flakes in the sauce. The sauce had a lot of flavour compared with the other veggies in the bowl. I loved the baby carrots – sweet and just right in its softness.

Yes – I’m a meat-eater, but sometimes it’s good to take a break and still have a good meal over a catch up with my friends. A couple of dishes filled us up very quickly, and you don’t always need meat to have a complete meal. For those who are Vegan or Vegetarian, it’s definitely worth a try. They have vegan ice cream, baklava and brownies – I will revisit with friends to try more of their other dishes!
