Code Black – Brunswick

I finally get to write about my favourite coffee roasters & their food at their Head Office, Brunswick. Their coffee beans are spread around Melbourne CBD made by many other cafes. But for some reason Code Black’s own baristas just make the perfect latte, cappuccino and mocha for me. They have 4 outlets in Melbourne – North Melbourne, Docklands, Collins St and Brunswick. I love the creaminess of their milk mixed with the hint of caramel taste from the beans. I’ve never had burnt coffee from their baristas. Please keep the quality going!

I took their coffee making half-day course, and learnt so much complexity in a coffee bean from a raw cherry to a coffee drink that involves the rules of chemistry.

As for their brunch menu, it lives up to their coffee. We visited on a Saturday morning for breakfast, it was busy but not full at 9am. The heater was on inside, so it was very pleasant. I ordered the Shakshuka – eggs baked in spiced tomato sauce with eggplant, red capsicum & za’atar bread, $19. This dish was big, I couldn’t finish it unfortunately :(. The za’atar bread was nice, I’ve never had this before – a little bit flavoured, and it went well with the Shakshuka. The two eggs baked was just right, any longer it would have been too rubbery.

There’s an option to add Chorizo for those who want a bit of meat, but seriously, I don’t think I needed Chorizo, if I couldn’t even finish this dish for breakfast! I’d suggest to share this dish if you want to add Chorizo.

C had the Portobello mushrooms, two poached eggs, rainbow chard, sumac, chickpeas & crispy mushrooms, $19. Look at the presentation – it’s perfect. We were a bit surprised that it didn’t come with any carbs. But every element came together, the fried enoki were like chips (some were crispy some were chewy). The puree underneath the portobello mushrooms was very tasty! Strong flavours of mushroom, a little creamy but not overpowering! After half way in the dish, we agreed that it didn’t need carbs or any bread.

If I’m ever at Brunswick, or on Collins St. I would always drop by for their coffee, but their breakfast menu is also highly recommended!
