Giant Steps

I’ve heard all about it and drove past it many times when I head pass Healesville. When I did want to go there, they were closed for renovation. Now they have re-opened! Beautiful interiors with vertical wooden designs for dining separation. I’ve never been inside before it was renovated, so I had no idea how it was prior. But it’s beautiful.. high ceilings makes it cooler in summer for a lovely date or catch up with girlfriends.

And that’s exactly what I did…

There is an area upstairs where we are free to walk around to see a glimpse of the brewing station.

Staff are very friendly, we were greeted with complimentary bread and butter. They refilled it as quickly as possible which was awesome. But was cautious to not eat too much of it!!

It was very easy to ask the staff for the suggestions – they were happy to. And yes – we were sold on the $30 platter – Chef’s Daily Selection (three). This included Sicilian salami, Sher Wagyu bresaola and San Daniele prosciutto. I made the mistake of having the heaviest salumi first, nevertheless it was beautiful – soft and finely cut for the Wagyu. The Prosciutto wasn’t too different to any other prosciutto, so I probably wouldn’t have that again. But the Sicilian Salami was very peppery – it added the kick which none of the other two had and loved it. My fave was still the Wagyu…

I’m not a fan of raw oysters.. but with the seaweed dressing, i gave it a try. $4 oyster (expensive – I know), but it was worth the try! It was so fresh and the dressing did not over power the freshness of the oyster. I wanted more of the dressing!

Then came our spanner crab + avocado salad w coconut, fresh lime, chilli + eschallots – $27, it was very light to start with. The salad itself was good, but I’m not a fan of coriander and as you can see they were quite generous on that! I enjoyed the coconut addition, but wished it had more dressing or sauce to give it more of a punch.

Our mains was the whole baby snapper (500gms) w green garlic sauce + lemon – serves 2 – $55. It was beautiful!! Although I prefer my fish de-boned, it was so juicy that bones didn’t matter to me! It had the lemon flavour and light garlic sauce which was perfectly flavoured. It anything the fish was on the slightly over cooked side. But it wasn’t  a big deal! We all loved it.

As a side we chose potato, chorizo + cravero parmesan gratin – $14. I thought the side would look just as good as the description, but I was disappointed in that. But the taste was good, nice textures, the potatoes were layered.. I probably wished it had more chorizos inside for the price of the side.

To finish the meal off, I had a mocha. It was good coffee – wouldn’t have thought.. but yes do try their coffee. I reckon their mochas are heavier on the coffee than the chocolate – something I’d prefer!

It was pretty good dining for just the food.

I’d revisit again, and definitely do some wine tasting the new year! If anyone has visited recently, I’d love to hear your recommendations on what to try next on their menu!
