Kong BBQ

Owned by the same group as the famous Chin Chin. Located on the busy Church Street where many furniture stores are sits Kong – Korean and Japanese Fusion Restaurant.

I first tried Kong BBQ was from the Melbourne Night Noodle Market 2015. Their buns were amazingly soft on the outside and well balanced on the inside. So we decided to give Kong BBQ a go on their other dishes!

Walking in feeling warmly welcomed by the staff. We did not have to wait on a Saturday morning for brunch (it was actually our second choice against Top Paddock). But it turned out being a good decision!  My boyfriend was happy that we did not have to wait and the food turned out great! The setting of the restaurant is very casual… with high ceilings where pipes are visible which made it more of a ‘warehouse’ than a setting you’d expect in ‘fine-dining’.

Kong BBQ Dining Area

Here’s what we had:

Mandhu – Wagyu Beef & Kimchi Dumplings with Soy Sauce

We started with these dumplings… And having the Kimchi compliment the Wagyu – just hit it for me. It was sour enough to kick start my pallet for the rest of our meals! Price of $18.00 is considered high for an entree in general but it is definitely worth it – unflawed!

BBQ Zucchini & Spice Crusted Silken Tofu Salad w Soy Vinegar Dressing

This Tofu and Zucchini salad is divine! Be careful it was a bit spicy for me. Despite spice, but because I love silken tofu, I just had to bear with it just so I can keep eating my favourite dish!

Bossam – Pork Belly w Soba Noodle, Nashi & Apple Soy Korean Fried Wings w Honey, Garlic & Sesame

Soba was very fresh with the Apple and Nashi. But it didn’t have the wow factor. There’s also some chilli in there, so it’s another warning from me! I probably would try other salad dishes just to cleans my pallet from flavoursome dishes like the Korean Wings! Wings were lovingly flavoursome, I was impressed with the portion given the price of $12. My boyfriend enjoyed it too and he is a wings fan.

Kong Passionfruit and Lemon Soda

This drink is also pretty unique – haven’t really seen this in other restaurants, because of citrus-y ingredients, the drink is good for summer!

I’d recommend Kong BBQ – it’s very different from Chin Chin. But if I were to pick one or the other, I’d pick Chin Chin! They don’t take any bookings unfortunately but you can do phone order for takeaway.
